{"id":1200,"date":"2016-09-21T18:45:34","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T18:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/?p=1200"},"modified":"2017-09-25T03:24:55","modified_gmt":"2017-09-25T03:24:55","slug":"two-yanks-go-home-sort-of","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/?p=1200","title":{"rendered":"Two Yanks Go Home&#8230;Sort Of."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Last week we entered Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, familiar waters from childhood, which brought up primordial memories of sailing in deep fog with a rope around my waist tied to the mast.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> W<\/span>e have been in unknown territories from Ft. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villamargheritahotel.it\/newbalance.php?shoes_id=fhl1py6-new-balance-grigie-bambino\">new balance grigie bambino<\/a> Pierce, FL, to Newport, RI.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>We were sure about this being unknown while driving our rental car from Orlando to the boat, where the highway stop was massive and Nelson Mandela quotes advertised bail bonds, to today in Newport RI, where the lovely Seamen\u2019s Church Institute has been providing various services to mariners since 1919:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>a chapel, showers, laundry, rooms, cheap eats, wifi in elegant lounge, blazers, a library, and quiet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">.<a href=\"http:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0481-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1317\" src=\"http:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0481-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0481\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0481-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0481-1-70x70.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0719-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1328\" src=\"http:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0719-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0719\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0719-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0719-1-70x70.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0715.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1309\" src=\"http:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0715-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0715\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0715-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_0715-70x70.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What I know:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We have suddenly self-identified as Northerners, which we never walk around doing anyplace else.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The mud in South Carolina is the finest we have ever anchored in: you drop the hook, it sets instantaneously and stays set, and when you pull it there is no caked mud to get off.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When the heat index is 100-108, one is sweaty, stinking wet most of the day and night unless positioned in exactly the right place at the right time&#8230;and not even thinking of moving a muscle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Of much else, not so sure:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is it easier to see history while traveling, or it the South specifically that pulls us in?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Who was it that got escorted away by two fully armed boats of commandos on the dinner tour boat Spirit of Norfolk, military commanders aboard, after a police search of the harbor and its boats (including obvious simple derelict sailboat)?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>And who got let off somewhere else than the usual round trip?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>Foreign head of state? Hillary (Charlotte that day, DC the next)?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Steve and I flew from Portland, OR, to Orlando, FL. It was lovely to put my feet on board the RC Louise\u2019s deck and feel the familiar ins and outs of a small, well-crafted space.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>It quickly became obvious that an aluminum sailboat in the US was a rarity and a magnet for boat builders, sailors, the head of the Chamber of Commerce, the junior counselors from the sailing school, young kids at a dock with grandma, and more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> People are always rowing over or waving us down. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgiantsuniform.com\/shop-by-player\/brandon-belt-jersey.html\">Brandon Belt Jersey<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kankenfjallraven.fr\/\">kanken fjallraven france<\/a> <\/span>We have been assumed to be French from a distance more than once. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikeairpegasus.fr\/nike-archive-83m-c-40_148.html\">Nike Archive 83.M<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Right away we met up with our friend John from Panama and his buddy Blades the dive rescue specialist.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>Both grew up in the Ft Pierce\/Vero Beach area and we saw it through their eyes and hospitality.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>We bounced out dirt roads to orange plantations with ditch irrigation where John worked as a kid and talked about the laborers then and now.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lepezou.fr\/\">Chaussures Nike<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canottebasket.it\/acquista-per-squadra\/milwaukee-bucks.html\">Milwaukee Bucks<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nike-airmax.fr\/nike-air-max-2017-pas-cher.html\">Nike Air Max 2017 Pas Cher<\/a> We poked around at an eerie country lake and dark canals, replete with tortuous vines and twisted trees and alligators.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>We drove down our first street of live oak strung with Spanish moss and brown resurrection fern (which turns green with any rain).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>His mom asked us all to lunch at the Riomar Beach Club, simple and elegant; Steve was cajoled into wearing both a new shirt and shorts and we drank Arnold Palmers. Her home, an \u201cOld Florida\u201d house with walls of tropical paintings and graceful pieces and shaded peace, was offered for us to stay in if we wanted.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>Blades took us to the National Navy Seal Museum and talked history with the veteran guides and thanked them for their service as we sat in a life boat from the Alabama Maersk and pondered a Patrol Boat River (PBR) from Vietnam era. we did fine with our shallow draft.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>The fixed bridges and power lines are 65 feet, which is nerve-wracking after we measured our mast at 64 feet, but we ended up turning the antennas upside down and went through comfortably at 61 feet.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goedkoopnikes.nl\/\">goedkoop nike air max 2017<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dorodni.pl\/buty-asics-damskie\/asics-gel-quantum-360-damskie.html\">asics gel quantum 360 damskie<\/a> As a result of this, we have put over 100 hours on the engine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our itinerary of stops was thus Cape Canaveral, Fernandina Beach, Cumberland Island, Port Royal (Station Creek), Beaufort (\u201cByew-furt\u201d SC), Charleston, Dewees Creek, Winyah Bay, Georgetown, Southport, Wrightsville, Beaufort (\u201cBofert\u201d NC), Pongo River, Alligator River, the Great Dismal Swamp, Norfolk, Little Creek, Cape May, Block Island, and Narragansett Bay. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Because we walk once ashore and rarely spend more than $10 to get into something, our explorations most often take us to small gems that just show up, and we often sail by the $35\/head stuff.<a href=\"http:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DSCN3513.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1209\" src=\"http:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DSCN3513-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN3513\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DSCN3513-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rclouise.whychus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DSCN3513-70x70.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a> We take a lot of tips from locals, like the lock master at Deep Creek.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>Otherwise, we would never have scoped out an Art Deco dinner theatre, the Commodore Theatre in Portsmouth. It makes us feel like rude, crude Northerners.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>When we step on a dock in a small town, often someone comes forward offering to drive us to the grocery, to take us to the local restaurant, to tell stories.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>This pleases us a lot.
